19th century

The Pale Blue Eye

The 19th century is the period designation attached to the novel’s West Point setting. It locates the story in a historical era, but the book’s acknowledgments caution that its use of real people and place belongs to a fictional enterprise, not a claim that the depicted crimes occurred.

Setting and Literary Context

The acknowledgments describe James Agnew’s Eggnog Riot as perhaps the only other 19th-century novel set at West Point. The comparison places the book within a small literary field defined by its academy setting and historical period; it does not establish that the novels share plots or historical claims.

Historical Distinction

The author specifically states that no cadets were murdered or even seriously injured during Sylvanus Thayer’s tenure. Although Thayer, Ethan Allen Hitchcock, and other real-life figures appear in the novel, their presence does not make its events historical testimony. The 19th-century setting therefore supplies a historical frame for a fictional story, while the acknowledgments mark a clear boundary between the two.
